Preparing For Disasters from Atmospheric Rivers

Join us for an event sponsored by the Inverness Disaster Council and Point Reyes Disaster Council.

Atmospheric rivers are relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere – like rivers in the sky – that transport water vapor from the tropics. Climate change may increase the occurrence and severity of atmospheric river events affecting California.

During recent atmospheric rivers, Marin experienced record rainfall and high winds. The resulting flooding, landslides, and downed trees blocked roads and caused sustained power outages and loss of telephone and internet services.

In this webinar we provided information on these topics in detail, featuring:

·       Brian Kirven, a poet, who set the tone.

·       Jerry Meral, Director of the California Water Program at the Natural Heritage Institute, who discussed the hazards we are likely to face in West Marin and how households and communities can mitigate potential damage.

·       Roy Pitts, Coordinator of the Point Reyes Disaster Council, who discussed the community disaster readiness plans with a focus on their communications and emergency response.

·       Ann Elliott, Coordinator for Inverness Disaster Council, who moderated the discussion with questions from webinar attendees.
